Cannery Row

This series is a group of photographs taken in late 1997 and early 1998.
They are photographs of details of some plywood panels that lined a work
site on Cannery Row in Monterey, California. The painting of these panels
was organized by Bruce Arris, an artist friend of John Steinbeck. He
organized a group of local artists to work from his sketches of Cannery
Row he had used for illustrating John Steinbeck's book. Due to building delays,
the panels stayed up in the elements for over 7 years. I remember
being fascinated by the panels as they slowly decayed. My interest
increased to the point of deciding to photograph these abstracted forms
of plywood, pealed paint, literary images and light and shadow.
